What are warm compresses?
Hot compresses are an old traditional home remedy for many minor ailments including chronic inflammation of the eyelids (blepharitis). Hot compresses for the eyes are an excellent way to open the blocked glands and relieve eye symptoms such as burning, foreign body sensation, intermittent blurred vision, burning eyes, itchy eyes, watery eyes and more. The most effective way to perform hot compresses is with the help of a compress mask.
Using a compress mask is extremely easy. Put in the microwave for 10 seconds (no more). Take it out of the microwave and then check with the back of your hand that the mask is not boiling or too hot. After that, choose the most comfortable armchair in the house, lean back and put on the mask so that it covers the closed eyes and close behind the head with the built-in clasp. It is recommended to perform compresses for 10 minutes twice a day in order to achieve the best results. Many patients report that if you do the compresses before going to bed, it relaxes the head and eyes a lot and helps you sleep better later on.
What's in it?
The compresses include a clean cloth or towel soaked in warm water. Of course, it is important to make sure that the water temperature is not too hot as you may suffer from burns, especially if the compresses are used on sensitive areas such as eyelids.
The wet cloth should be squeezed and placed gently on the relevant area. It is important to persist in the treatment in order to achieve results and it is desirable to repeat the operation about 3-4 times a day, each time for 5 minutes. If necessary, re-moisten the wet cloth when it cools down, wring it out and repeat.
Warming and maintaining moisture in certain situations may relieve pain, inflammation or other problems. Warm compresses can also help diseases on the outside of the eye such as barley, eyelid inflammation (blepharitis), itching and red eyes.
As mentioned, the hot compresses also have advantages in the treatment of various eye conditions:
barley
Warm compresses are a common way to treat and prevent barley in the eye. Barley appears at the edge of the eyelid, externally or internally, and is usually due to blockage of the hair follicle or blockage of a sebaceous gland (Meibomian bumps). These glands play an important role in the production of the fatty component in tears, which is necessary to prevent rapid evaporation of tears and to shield the eye (thereby reducing the friction between the eye and the eyelid). When blocked, warm compresses can soften the fat in the glands and bring it to the desired state of accumulation (like olive oil and not like an ointment), which allows the opening of the blockage and the drainage of the infection.
Chronic Blepharitis
Besides barley, the eyelids can be inflamed or swollen for other reasons as well, and they may be covered with scales which itself leads to the blockage of the glands and dry eyes as a result. Warm compresses have demonstrated relief of blepharitis symptoms, which include itchy eyes, foreign body sensation, dryness and blurred vision.
